A New Home for Your Flock: Your Shed-to-Coop Guide

An underused backyard shed could become a home for your chickens. Yes, you can turn a shed into a chicken coop—if the structure is sound and you adapt it for airflow, secure access, and daily care.

Here are the essentials to plan before you start.

Check the Structure and Space

Inspect the roof, walls, and floor for leaks, rot, and gaps. Repair damage, remove sharp fasteners, and address any contamination from stored chemicals. Check local poultry rules and HOA restrictions before making changes.

Plan around your flock size. Cooperative Extension guidance recommends roughly 3–4 square feet indoors and 10 square feet outdoors per laying hen as a starting point. Larger breeds or birds spending extended periods indoors may need more room. Include space for a secure outdoor run.

Bring In Light and Fresh Air

Ventilation helps remove moisture and stale air. Position openings to avoid direct drafts across roosts, and plan enough airflow for your flock and climate.

Our Flush-Mount Tilt-Out Chicken Coop Window includes tempered glass, a screen, an aluminum frame, and mounting hardware. It opens from the outside, so you can adjust ventilation without entering the coop.

Pair operable windows with our 8-inch by 8-inch Aluminum Wall Vent as part of your ventilation plan. For extra daylight above a door or in an upper wall, consider our Fixed Flush-Mount Transom Window. It adds light, but does not open for airflow.

Secure Doors and Openings

Check windows, vents, doors, and floor gaps for potential entry points. Use securely fastened hardware cloth suited to local predators; don’t assume an insect screen provides predator protection. Protect the run from digging animals and overhead threats, too.

For compatible doors or access panels, our 5-inch Black Heavy Duty T-Hinges come in a three-pack with mounting screws. Our 5½-inch Black T-Handle Shed Door Lock Kit provides a keyed closure for a compatible main door.

Our 15-inch by 20-inch Pet Door offers a separate entrance to the run and includes a removable closure panel. Plan a secure nighttime closure and fasten all doors after your flock goes inside.

Make Cleaning and Egg Collection Easy

Arrange stable roosts, nesting boxes, feeders, and waterers so you can reach them easily. Keep food and water out from under roosts, and leave room to remove bedding.

In a separate storage area, our Garden Tool Organizer with 5 Holders and 4 Hooks can keep compatible brooms and rakes handy for cleaning. Mount tools out of the birds’ reach.

Choose Parts That Fit Your Project

Measure before ordering. Confirm window openings, mounting requirements, door thickness, and hardware compatibility. Include repairs and run materials in your budget.
