When Tom and his family decided to get chickens for their historic family farm, he knew he wanted to build a chicken coop that would fit the property's rustic, timeless aesthetic. The result is a truly one-of-a-kind chicken palace that Tom affectionately calls "Cluckingham Palace."
Tom's inspiration for the chicken coop came from the farm's rich history. "We've been renovating the house and gardens, and we recently got some goats," he explains. "My son, daughter-in-law, and grandkids wanted to raise chickens, so I said I'd build them a chicken coop - but I wanted it to look like it's been there for 100 years."
Rather than following pre-made plans, Tom drew inspiration from researching various chicken coop designs online. He wanted to create a vintage-inspired look that would complement the property's 1890s farmhouse. With the help of his sons, one of whom is a skilled carpenter, Tom built the coop to be structurally sound like a miniature house.
The attention to detail is what makes this chicken coop so special. Tom used reclaimed barn wood for the exterior, giving it an authentic aged appearance. He even had a custom sign made that reads "Cluckingham Palace," complete with a bejeweled crown on top - a nod to the coop's regal moniker.
But Tom's creativity didn't stop there. He added a living succulent roof, planting hens and chicks to continue the chicken theme. The window boxes from ShedParts.com, were given an antique touch by covering them in more reclaimed barn wood.
When asked what advice he'd give to other DIY enthusiasts tackling a similar project, Tom emphasizes the importance of doing your research and not being afraid to invest in pre-made plans. "They can really help streamline the process and prevent headaches," he says. He also encourages people to have fun and not overthink it.
"At some point, you just have to start. Stick to your vision, and you can end up with something really special."
With its charming historic details and whimsical royal touches, Tom's chicken coop is a true labor of love that beautifully complements the character of his family's historic farm. It serves as a testament to what can be achieved with some creativity, determination, and a passion for DIY.
